The route

The route

We’re proposing changes that will make this route safer and more accessible for everyone.

 Key proposed changes include:

  • An improved bike lane up Brooklyn Road – at street-level with concrete buffers from the lower Nairn Street intersection to upper Nairn Street (with low rubber speed humps at driveways), and a raised bike lane with a wide kerb up to just past the intersection with Ohiro Road
  • New painted bike lanes on both sides of Ohiro Road starting from where the trial lane ends now and continuing to and from the shops
  • A new on-road shared downhill bike route via Ohiro Road to Aro Street with new speed humps, road marking improvements, and a raised courtesy crossing at the Ohiro Road/Aro Street intersection to make the route safer for everyone
  • Three new raised zebra crossings, five new raised courtesy crossings, improvements to an existing zebra crossing, and safer pedestrian refuge islands
  • A new section of footpath on the east side of Brooklyn Road near Bidwill Street connecting the bus stop and pedestrian crossing point
  • A new mobility car park in Cleveland Street
  • Street changes to encourage safer speeds around the intersection of Ohiro Road and Brooklyn Road
  • Relocating and removing some bus stops
  • Parking changes and removal.

Walking

Changes for people walking

Brooklyn Road
  • Improve access to Central Park with a new raised zebra crossing on Brooklyn Road near the main entrance
  • Install a new raised courtesy crossing towards the bottom of Brooklyn Road near the lower end of Nairn Street
  • Install two new raised courtesy crossings across the intersections of Bidwill Street and Washington Avenue
  • Install a new pedestrian refuge on Brooklyn Road near Washington Avenue
  • Upgrade three existing pedestrian refuge islands near the entrance to Central Park apartments, upper Nairn Street and above Washington Avenue
  • Move and upgrade the existing pedestrian refuge on Brooklyn Road below Bidwill Street by about 15m further downhill
  • Extend the footpath on Brooklyn Road near Bidwill Street by about 50m to connect the southbound bus stop with the relocated pedestrian crossing point, and also with the footpath to Nairn Street Park
  • Install a safer new pedestrian refuge island on Brooklyn Road just below Washington Avenue, replacing the one by the right-turn bay
  • Install a new 75m section of footpath west of the Brooklyn Road/Ohiro Road intersection on the city-bound side of the road where there is no footpath at the moment – connecting Ohiro Road with the proposed new zebra crossing.
Ohiro Road
  • Install two new raised zebra crossings on Ohiro Road, just above the intersection of Brooklyn Road and Ohiro Road, near Brooklyn Terrace, and another near Tanera Crescent
  • Install a new raised courtesy crossing on lower Ohiro Road near Aro Street.
Cleveland Street

Bike

Proposed changes for people on bikes

  • Install an improved bike lane up Brooklyn Road – at street-level with concrete buffers from the lower Nairn Street intersection to upper Nairn Street (with low rubber speed humps at driveways), and a raised bike lane with a kerb up to just past the intersection with Ohiro Road
  • Install painted bike lanes in both directions on Ohiro Road from about where the trial lane ends now and continuing to and from the shops. Heading from the shops, the new lane would extend to the Ohiro Road/Brooklyn Road intersection
  • Install bus stop by-passes at all uphill bus stops on Brooklyn Road – near the substation opposite the tennis centre, Bidwill Street and Washington Avenue – and at the remaining southbound bus stop on Ohiro Road
  • Create a safer shared on-road bike route downhill via Ohiro Road to Aro Street with six speed humps, road marking improvements, and a raised courtesy crossing at the Ohiro Road/Aro Street intersection
  • More confident riders can still ride downhill via Brooklyn Road sharing with traffic as they do now
  • Safer connections at the bottom of Brooklyn hill, from Victoria Street and to Willis Street, are being considered as part of Let’s Get Wellington Moving's Featherston Street and south-west Te Aro project.

Bus

Proposed changes for people on the bus

  • Remove three bus stops to improve journey times and provide more consistent spacing – the southbound and citybound stops near the main Central Park entrance, creating space for a new pedestrian crossing, plus the southbound stop closest to the Ohiro Road/Cleveland Street intersection
  • Provide just one bus stop on the top section of Ohiro Road in a location between the two existing stops
  • Move the pair of bus stops on Brooklyn Road that are near the top end of Nairn Street (the citybound stop would be relocated down the hill by the Seido Karate building and the Brooklyn-bound stop a bit lower down the hill by the substation)
  • Move citybound bus stop 7715 about 50m downhill between Bidwill Street and Nairn Street and install a new shelter
  • Install a new bus shelter at the relocated citybound stop near Seido Karate
  • Make minor footpath improvements near the citybound bus stop near Tanera Crescent to provide a safe connection between the new zebra crossing and the bus stop
  • Install bus stop by-passes for people biking up Brooklyn Road at all three bus stops (near the substation, near Bidwill Street and near Washington Avenue), and also on the Brookyn-bound Ohiro Road stop in its new location.
