We want to make cycling a safe and easy transport option. This will benefit all Wellingtonians – not just those who cycle.
Over the next 10 years we’re building a connected cycle network covering the whole of Wellington.
Council - NZTA review
Wellington City Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency have been working together to deliver a practical and achievable new-look cycling programme for Wellington.
This was in response to the Transport Agency-commissioned independent review (1.3MB PDF) of the Council’s cycleways programme by consultants Morrison Low.
The revised cycling programme was unanimously approved by Councillors at a Transport and Urban Development Committee meeting on 11 August 2016.
Wellington City Council and the Government plan to invest $37.25 million in a Wellington cycling network over four years (2015−2019).
Where the money is coming from
Two-thirds of this investment is coming from the Urban Cycleways Fund and the National Land Transport Fund. Both funds are administered by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
