Parking changes

Improving safety and making it easier for more people to get around in climate-friendly ways more often, without relying on cars, requires some changes to how we use space on our streets. This means making changes in some areas in line with the Council's parking policy. On busy streets like these, space is prioritised for people to safely and easily walk, bike, or travel by bus and for people who have to drive.

The traffic resolutions (legal changes) being considered as part of this consultation will formalise parking changes that were made as part of the installation of the trial bike lane in 2021.

In addition, the permanent changes now planned include removing additional parking in some places so that street space can be used in ways that will improve safety and benefit more people. A few changes to parking time restrictions and designations are also proposed.

Proposed parking changes street by street

Brooklyn Road
  • Remove 37 more spaces on Brooklyn Road and formalise the removal of the 48 parking spaces that were removed when the trial lane was installed. After the changes, there will still be parking on Brooklyn Road for about 91 vehicles on the Central Park side (this includes the existing P30 by Central Vet Hospital, and a mix of coupon and unrestricted spaces).
  • The main places where it's proposed additional parking will be removed are in lower Brooklyn Road on the uphill side below the substation (about 19 spaces) and beside the substation (the four parallel parking spaces). On the other side of the road, the four off-street spaces near Seido Karate would be removed as well as some on-street parking to improve safety and make space for the relocated bus stop.
Ohiro Road
  • Remove all on-street parking from both sides of Ohiro Road between the intersection of Brooklyn Road and Ohiro Road and the intersection of Ohiro Road/Cleveland and Todman streets, so a safer biking connection can be provided on this narrow busy route (30 spaces)
  • Remove the off-street parking area (about 10 spaces) near Brooklyn Road and Ohiro Road so this space can be used to make the intersection safer for everyone, including a new section of footpath.
Cleveland Street
  • Install an additional mobility parking space near 46 Cleveland Street replacing two P30 spaces (the third P30 space here will be removed to keep the fire hydrant clear)
  • Change the angle parking on Cleveland Street near the fire station to parallel parking to make the street safer for people on bikes and provide more space for buses – four P30 spaces down to two P30 spaces
  • After these changes, Cleveland Street will have 13 unrestricted spaces, 13 P30 spaces, eight P10 spaces and two mobility parking spaces.
Washington Avenue
  • Remove four spaces opposite Cleveland Street (by 41a to 43 Washington Avenue) to provide enough space for buses to stay in their lane while turning right into Washington Avenue.
Jefferson Street
  • Replace the taxi stand on Jefferson Street, which isn’t used much, with a P30 space.
